A 3-hour Training with Samuel MacMaster, PhD

August 25, 2023

12:30pm-4pm

PRESENTATION: The opioid epidemic has garnered most of the headlines and attention, yet a recent rise in stimulant use is shifting the needs of individuals engaged in community corrections and substance use treatment services.  These needs require tailored approaches to ensure that all individuals are appropriately served by drug court teams.  This presentation will review the current state of stimulant use, provide a review of evidence-based approaches and real world suggestions that best meet the needs of stimulant users, and discuss barriers and facilitators to serving individuals who use stimulants (with or without other drug use).  Participants will develop a higher level of competency and confidence in working with people who use stimulants who are enrolled in drug court programs.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Participants will become aware of the rise in stimulant use and a variety of evidence-based approaches to providing services to individuals who use stimulants.
  • Participants will engage in a discussion of barriers and facilitators that impact the ability of services to improve engagement for individuals who use stimulants
  • Participants will have the confidence to incorporate the information in real world application to their own settings to improve services

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Samuel MacMaster, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor within the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College and serves as the Executive Director of the Elam Mental Health Center, the primary indigent care behavioral health provider for the city of Nashville.  He previously held academic positions within the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee.  For the past three decades, Dr. MacMaster has worked with numerous organizations to design and implement addiction treatment programs throughout the country. He has produced three books and over seventy-five peer-reviewed publications related to substance use; and has significant clinical experience working with people who use drugs.
