PRESENTATION: One of the most difficult to understand aspects of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria is the concept of imminent danger. ASAM created concepts outside of the traditional medical or psychiatric definition of “dangerousness.” Traditional concepts were sometimes limited to suicidality, self-harm, violence, or acute medical risk. The concept of imminent danger should be broad enough to support attending to patient safety in high risk situations of any type. The goal of this training is for the participants to gain an understanding of ASAM's imminent danger criteria, how it can be used to determine the correct dose of treatment, and how it can influence the course of treatment. As a result of this training:
- Participants will be able to objectively apply the three criteria of imminent danger.
- Participants will verbalize an understanding of how imminent danger affects level of care placement.
- Participants will understand how imminent danger concerns should be addressed on a treatment plan.
