PRESENTATION: This interactive, multimedia training is designed for professionals working in the field of Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders. This presentation will provide detailed information on the history, pharmacology, use patterns and current trends associated with common and emerging substances of misuse, with a particular focus on New Hampshire.  As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the progression from substance use to substance misuse.
  • Understand the BioPsychoSocial effects of various substances.
  • Develop a greater understanding of historical and current trends in substance misuse.
  • Gain knowledge related to addressing substance use disorders

This presentation is intended to increase participant’s knowledge of historical, current, and emerging substances of misuse in service of enhancing their ability to address substance use disorders in their practice. The presentation will follow a format utilizing slides and videos, with participant discussion and question/answer throughout.

A basic overview of the signs of progression from substance use to misuse to chemical dependence to addiction will be illustrated by a short video and group discussion. Cultural and social influences related to lifestyle and current and evolving trends in substance use will be introduced as a frame of reference for the rest of the presentation.

Specific substances covered will include: 

  • Alcohol 
  • Opioids 
  • Cocaine / Crack 
  • Methamphetamine 
  • Cannabis 
  • Hallucinogens  
  • Prescription drugs 
  • Research Chemicals 

Information related to these substances will include: 

  • History/origin of use of the substance 
  • Psychopharmacology 
  • Acute and long term effects 
  • Local, national and international trends of use 

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Jack Genakos MLADC has been working in the field of Substance Use and Co-Occurring Disorders since 1979. He is currently a Case Manager in the Child & Adolescent Department at The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester in Manchester, New Hampshire.  Jack has worked with adults, adolescents, and their families in outpatient and inpatient settings including the Veteran’s Administration, Hampstead Hospital, Seaborne Hospital, and Catholic Medical Center. He served as a Student Assistance Counselor at Londonderry Middle School in Londonderry, New Hampshire for over ten years. Jack has provided training, counseling and consultation services to Rockingham and Strafford County Houses of Correction, Southern New Hampshire University, New Hampshire Technical Institute, and the University of New Hampshire. He has also had extensive experience working with First Nations Residential School Survivors in New Brunswick, Canada. Jack holds a Master of Education degree in Leisure Studies and Therapeutic Recreation from Boston University, and is currently licensed as a Master Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor in New Hampshire.

NH Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselors Association has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider. ACEP No 6754. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. NHADACA is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
