A 4-Hour Training with Daniel Piippo, LMSW

March 24, 2023

12:30pm–4:00pm

PRESENTATION: This course is designed to prepare participants for crisis events in social services. The course will equip participants to identify potential crisis situations and respond effectively when a crisis situation occurs. The course will discuss what contributes to the crisis and how the person in crisis may respond. It will also help participants see how their own reactions can either escalate or defuse the situation. Some de-escalation tactics take an “us vs them” approach which fails to address the needs of the person in crisis. However, this course will help participants look for bridge building moments to work towards a positive outcome for both the social services provider and the person in crisis.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Participants will be able to Identify signs of escalation
  • Participants will be able to recognize safety concerns for both them and the person in crisis and take steps to mitigate them

  • Participants will be able to use de-escalation tools to respond empathically to the person in crisis

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dan Piippo is a licensed hospital social worker (LMSW) who has worked in the field for over 15 years. He currently works for a major healthcare system in an Emergency Department and an Inpatient Mental Health Unit. In both locations, he encounters a variety of patients in crisis. He has also worked in an acute Community Mental Health setting as well as a Partial Hospitalization Program. He was a patient/client rights advocate for both an Inpatient Mental Health Unit and an Inpatient Substance Use Unit. He is also the former President of the Recipient Rights Officer Association of Michigan.
