PRESENTATION: Youth Mental Health First Aid is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and how to refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid and the role of the Youth Mental Health First Aider.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth.
- Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development.
- Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to non-crisis situations.
- Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations.
- Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of Youth Mental Health First Aid in a crisis or non-crisis situation.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:
Jane Skantze is the Community Impact Manager at Makin’ It Happen in Manchester, NH. Jane received her Bachelor's of Art in Political Science from Plymouth State University in 2010. She is currently in her third year of a Master of Social Work program at Boston University. Jane is a Certified Prevention Specialist in the State of New Hampshire. She has worked for the past ten years in the non-profit sector here in New Hampshire providing training, direct services, and community-focused services throughout the state.
Kara LaMarche is a mental health educator and advocate for mental health awareness. She has a strong history of working in partnership with schools and community partners to elevate the importance of mental health wellness for youth and families and communities. Kara brings her social media and marketing experience and commitment to building resiliency to her advocacy and training efforts focused on breaking down stigma, and educating and empowering individuals and communities.
