A 6-hour training with Paul Kiernan, LADC

December 8th & 9th, 2022

8:30am–12:00pm (daily)

PRESENTATION: This is a 6-hour training specifically designed to help participants understand the basics of ASAM criteria and learn skills that can be useful in applying the spirit of ASAM and its criteria to their practice. Participants will be provided with information on ASAM and ASAM based approaches to all stages of care, from assessment to continuing care. This training will be interactive and provide participants ample time to ask questions and gain a better and more well-rounded understanding of ASAM Criteria. 

Following the completion of this training: 

  • Each participant will be able to complete a 6-dimensional assessment utilizing the ASAM criteria and provide a level of care recommendation. 
  • Each participant will be able to utilize ASAM's Continuing Care or Transfer/Discharge Criteria to determine transition decisions 
  • Each participant will be able to utilize an ASAM dimensional assessment to create an effective treatment plan. 

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Paul Kiernan is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor with 15 years of experience working in the field of addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Mr. Kiernan currently works as the Quality and Compliance lead at Better Life Partners, working to ensure that patients at BLP receive the highest quality care possible. Prior to his role at Better Life Partners, Mr. Kiernan was a Project Manager at JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. and worked on the New Hampshire Center for Excellence Addressing Alcohol and other Drugs, a project that provides statewide training and technical assistance. Prior to his position at the Center for Excellence, Mr. Kiernan was the Clinical Services Specialist at the Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services with the State of New Hampshire. At the Bureau, Mr. Kiernan provided technical assistance and training to agencies contracted with the State of New Hampshire as well as other state agencies upon request, audits of substance use disorder treatment records and contract monitoring and clinical oversight of these contacted agencies.  Mr. Kiernan was involved directly with the American Society of Addiction Medicine for the state role out of the CONTNIUUM Assessment patient placement software.  He also served on several committees including the New Hampshire State Internal Review Board, the Behavioral Health Equity Work Group and the Sentinel Event Review Team.Mr. Kiernan also has years of experience working as a clinician providing services in residential withdrawal management, outpatient services and intensive outpatient programs. He spent the majority of his career working in intensive outpatient services at the Nathan Brody Program at Horizons Counseling Center.
