PRESENTATION: This presentation will provide an introduction on the effects of parental substance use disorder on all family members with particular focus on the children. Emphasis will be on ways to promote increased resiliency and hope for recovery in family members. This sets the stage for a panel on resources and programs available for children and kinship caregivers. Following the training, participants will be able to: 

• Model empathy for all members of the family, including parent with addiction
• Describe effects of parental addiction on children
• Promote increased resiliency and hope for recovery for all members through community programming

ABOUT THE PRESENTER AND PANELISTS:  

Lindy Keller is a Master Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor who has worked in the addiction field since 1980.  She received her A.B. in Psychology and Religion from Duke University and her M.S. in Community Mental Health with a specialization in Dual Diagnosis from Southern New Hampshire University.  Her experience includes direct service, consultation, training and administration of programs addressing substance use concerns.  She has presented workshops on aspects of addiction, co-occurring disorders, recovery, enhancing change, high‑risk youth, resiliency and families.  She has served on the faculty of the New England School of Addiction Studies since 2007.  In her current position as the Resources and Development Administrator for the NH Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Services, she is responsible for public and professional education, support for internal systems development and cross-systems policy and program development. 

Kat Morris has over a decade of experience working with families through her work at the FRC and in church Ministry. Her organizational skills and systems thinking supported the FRC Kinship team to grow from a part-time project for two caregivers to a full program serving over 50 north country families that's still growing! Kat currently is the Training and Development Manager at the Family Resource Center.

Amanda Lewis is a mother of 3 and enjoys the ability to relate to parents on a personal level and show them through lived experience that everyone struggles, but everyone can learn. She been blessed to have her parents and grandparents support along the way with my kids, selflessly stepping in whenever needed; She have the utmost respect for Kinship caregivers.

Tiffani Arsenault is a Family Support Specialist, Family Connections Center at the NH Dept of Corrections in Berlin, NH. She has over ten years in this role and is an experienced educator, case manager and advocate for incarcerated parents and their children. From 2014 through 2020 she was an Adjunct faculty teaching Juvenile Justice Administration through the Community College System of NH. Tiffani has her Master of Science from Eastern Kentucky University in Adult, Juvenile & Community Corrections and her BS in Criminal Justice from Granite State College.

Shannon Lavertu  is a Kinship Navigator with the Family Resource Center. She is the mom of seven children. The first three are biological children, two are her adopted children, and two are her Great Nephews that she has had guardianship of for the last five years. She was a Kinship provider for almost three years before the Kinship program was rolled out. This gives her a very unique perspective, she knows from personal experience what a new Kinship arrangement with face and she is able to make the transition a smoother process for the families. 

Donna Marston, Author, Certified Recovery Support Worker, Certified CPI Instructor (Crisis Prevention Intervention), NAMI™ Trained Family Support Facilitator, 2015 "Recovery Provider of the Year" N.H. Providers Association. Member of the Recovery Task Force of N.H. Governor's Commission on Alcohol & Drug Abuse - where she represents families.  Donna is the founder of Families Sharing With Out Shame; she has provided family support groups in NH since 2010 and she is a Mother who knows the heartache of watching a child in active addiction and the miracle of recovery.
