PRESENTATION:  This 6-hour training will provide a brief review of a model of cognition and an overview of the type of impairment often observed after overdose and traumatic injury.   Information about how substance use may impact cognition will be discussed.   We will practice how to screen for brain injury as well as how to recognize and accommodate neurocognitive impairment in the clients you serve.  As a result of attending this training participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how neurocognitive impairment presents in the clients they serve;
  2. Understand how substance use may impact cognitive functioning;
  3. Perform the Ohio Valley Brain Injury Identification Method and understand how to interpret the results;
  4. Identify specific strategies that they can use to support clients who have difficulties with attention, memory and organization;
  5. Identify how plans of care may need to be adapted to accommodate poor self-regulation; and
  6. Identify strategies for supporting clients with impairments of social cognition that result in interpersonal difficulties.
