PRESENTATION: Trauma informed practice implies a working knowledge of not only what signs and symptoms exist with trauma but also, how trauma impacts brain function, coping, and client well-being. This session will cover the basics of trauma definition and symptomology, with special focus the impact of multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACES) on brain process and its impact on coping and substance use. As a result of this training, participant will be able to:

• Gain an understanding of trauma specific terminology;
  
• Recognize those events and venues of trauma exposure;
  
• Recognize the cumulative effect of Adverse Childhood experiences on the brain and coping;
  
• Understand the impact trauma(s) has on coping and substance use;
  
• Recognize their role and opportunities for support when working with those exposed to multiple traumas (ACES); and
  
• Explore a variety of prevention strategies in working with individuals, families and communities to decrease negative coping including potential substance use.
