A 6 hour training event with Marissa Carlson, CPS & Julie Yerkes, EdM, CPS

8:30am – 4:00pm on October 22, 2019



PRESENTATION:  This training is appropriate for anyone working in the field of substance misuse prevention. Participants will explore the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics principles (Non-Discrimination, Competence, Integrity, Nature of Services, Confidentiality and Ethical Obligations for Community and Society) and a four-step decision-making process designed to help navigate ethical dilemmas. Participants will explore case examples on topics ranging from confidentiality and integrity to ethical obligations and non-discrimination. Participants will engage in small- and large-group discussions of key concepts.    At completion, participants will be able to: define ethics and related terms; describe the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics; and use a decision-making process to resolve ethical dilemmas.  As a result of this training, participants will: 

  • Understand the distinctions between ethics and values;
  • Become familiar with the 6 principles of Prevention Ethics;
  • Be able to apply the ethical decision making model

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:  Marissa Carlson, CPS is the Executive Director of the NH Teen Institute, a leadership development non-profit working with middle & high school students from around NH & New England in a variety of areas including substance misuse prevention, peer mentoring, and creating positive school & community climate.  She has been a Certified Prevention Specialist since 2011 and, as part of her role at TI, oversees and facilitates training for both the youth participants and TI’s youth & adult volunteer program staff.  Outside of her work with TI, Marissa is the Associate Artistic Director of Mill City Productions, a theatre company in Western Massachusetts. 

Julie Yerkes, EdM, CPS, is the Parent Education Coordinator at the NH Teen Institute, where she provides strength-based prevention programming to the parents of preteens and teens across the state of NH.  In addition, Julie supports TIs various programming for youth. For over 20 years, Julie has supported adolescents, parents, teachers, and youth workers in a variety of capacities: as a traditional classroom teacher, school counselor, community program manager, and school administrator. Julie has taught middle and high school English in VT, NH, and CA, taught English to International students at the New England School of English in Cambridge, MA, managed the Civic Education Programs at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH, and directed the School of Creative and Performing Arts, with campuses in LA, NYC, and Burlington, VT. Julie develops creative programming to connect families, schools and communities to best support the healthy development of our youth.

REGISTRATION FEE: NHADACA Members $40.  Non-Members $50. NBCC add $5. Lunch will be on your own.
